When you are towing a caravan or trailer ensuring you are doing it safely is vital! Electric Brake Controllers provide ultimate safety when towing.
Do I need Electric Brakes?
In Australia under the Australian National Towing Regulations
trailers including caravan’s, horse floats, boat & trailers, which weight exceeds 750kg GTM* limit are legally required to have an efficient braking system on at least one axle.
It is also a legal requirement that all caravans, trailers and floats exceeding 2000kg (GTM) are fitted with an efficient braking system on all wheels.
Electric brakes are the most common form of an “efficient braking system” and come standard on most camper trailers and caravans.

The brake system must cause an immediate application of the trailer brakes in the event of the trailer becoming detached from the towing vehicle. Under these circumstances, the brakes must remain applied for at least 15 minutes. |
GTM: it is the weight of the fully loaded trailer (water, food, clothes, chairs, esky, dog, beers….) imposed on the trailer’s axle when it is coupled to the tow vehicle. The most accurate way to get your GTM is to load the trailer or caravan up and drive it onto a weigh bridge (vehicle wheels not on weighbridge).
ATM: The weight of a fully loaded trailer (or caravan, float, boat and trailer) when it is not coupled to a tow vehicle.
**GTM will always be less than ATM as some of the trailer weight is transferred to the tow vehicle when the trailer is coupled to it.
What are the types of Electric Brake Controllers?
There are two types of electric brake controllers - a proportional brake controller and a time-delayed brake controller.
1. The proportional brake controller basically senses how the vehicle is slowing or stopping and applies the caravans brakes with the same pressure. The advantage of a proportional brake controller is that the braking is much smoother, and effective, therefore safer. There is also less wear on both the vehicle and caravan brakes
2. The time-delayed brake controller activates the caravan’s brakes with a preset pressure (power output) and rate of application (sync), all previously set by you. With this type, there is a delay between the time you apply the brakes on the vehicle, and when the brakes reach their pre-set pressure on the caravan.
